International House has a new Young Learner Manager!
In September of 2009 Lauriane Le Breton joined our school from International House Moscow to take on the post as manager of Young Learners. Along with her experience living and working in English-speaking countries, she brings with her several years of having taught Young Learners and also having worked in Summer Language camps, where each year over 1,400 students came to practise their English in an immersion environment.
At our two branch schools in Foz and Leça da Palmeira
we have specially designed programmes for all our children and young learners,
planning carefully for the different age and intellectual development stages
they go through.
Teaching children (7–11 year olds) and young learner
teenagers (12–15) is an area we specialise in and one that we greatly enjoy.
It appears that the children do too; they often stay with us for the whole of
their educational childhood!
It is essential to ensure that the children feel
secure and comfortable in a safe environment to explore, play and experiment
with English, learning early how to become natural communicators with an ever
expanding range of vocabulary.
Each course is carefully conceptualized so that the
contents and methodologies engage the interests of the children and in doing so
reflect our determination to provide a contemporary view and experience of
English Language learning in the true mission intention of the founders of
International House.
Lessons for children and teenagers typically last 60 minutes
The
lessons take place twice during the week, mornings or afternoons
There
are lessons on Saturday morning too (2 hours)
The
academic year begins in October or September for Examination groups
Students
are expected to buy a course book at the beginning of the year

In addition to traditional methods of reporting,
parents and the students themselves now have on-line access via individual
log-in and pass word to all the on going evaluations, test results, homework
grades and full teacher commentaries on a child at the school. It is a very
fast, user friendly service which can bring you up to date in seconds on the
progress of a child, monitoring the global scores throughout the year.

IH Porto is now an officially recognized Cambridge YL
Examinations centre (IH students only). We believe these exams are highly motivating for the children and
provide a very reliable method of recording progress.
Our aim is to establish a stimulating, non-threatening environment for all children so that they will look forward to their lessons and enjoy the fun of communicating in English from the very start.
