Course Participants: This course is suitable for you if…
- you are a teacher of English, or would like to train to be one;
- you have a native or advanced competence in English;
- you would like to understand English grammar in more detail.
Course Aims: The International House Language Awareness Course has two aims:
- To familiarise course participants with descriptions of language;
- To enable course participants to critique such descriptions, both in terms of their descriptive accuracy, and their usefulness to learners.
Course Outline/ Structure: The course consists of 14 modules as follows:
- Describing Language (Introductory unit)
- Tenses
- Auxiliaries & Operators
- Modal Verbs I (probability)
- Modal Verbs II (obligation)
- Will & Would
- Future Forms
- Forms with Have (perfect aspect)
- Forms with Be (progressive aspect)
- Forms with Be (passive voice)
- The Verb Form
- Conditional Sentences
- The Noun Phrase
- Language as Lexis
Each module is comprised of
- An input session of ninety minutes’ duration
- A sheet with optional home study tasks
The input sessions include guided discovery tasks, where course
participants analyse authentic sentences, invented sentences and authentic
texts, and group discussion activities. There are also more trainer-centred
stages where particular descriptions of language are presented. All sessions
end with a stage where course participants have a chance to discuss issues in
the teaching and learning of the language points which they have been studying.
The homework tasks are optional and require the course participant to
research particular language points and terminology. There is also a list of
suggested reading. Both help consolidate what is covered in the sessions.
Participants who attend 80% or more of the course will be issued with an International House Porto Certificate.
